Arlington Apartment Rental Residents Benefit from a Cleaner Potomac River

Arlington VA apartment rental residents are now reaping the rewards of environmental investment. The Potomac River is finally, after a century of neglect followed by a great amount of recent hard work, becoming clean again. Over the past 20 years, the Potomac has seen a concerted effort by many local residents to reclaim their polluted waterway, and a new survey says that they are succeeding.

Apartment Rental Tenants Get Involved

For more than 20 years, the Alice Fergusan Foundation has been working to clean up the Potomac River watershed, which includes parts of Maryland, DC, and Virginia. The Potomac River goes along the eastern side of Arlington, separating it from DC proper, and is a favorite spot for many apartment rental residents.

Now, after years of fighting to end pollution in the river, a study has shown that efforts are certainly paying off, though the river still has a long way to go if it is going to achieve optimal health. Still, apartment rental occupants have started to see major changes in the beauty of DC’s most prominent waterway.

Many local residents (both home owners and residents of apartment rentals) participate in the Alice Fergusan Foundation’s annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup. Food, fun, education, and community pride combine to help residents take back their environment from urban degradation. Even many residents that are only living in town through the political cycle have found themselves deeply involved in the protection and restoration of the area.

The Alice Fergusan Foundation has also launched a Trash-Free Potomac Watershed by 2013 campaign which seeks to end all excessive pollution in the next 3 years. As part of their launch of the campaign, they have launched an effort to find out why people litter in an attempt to change the social norm, much the way seat belts have become second nature.

Government Measures To Clean Up NoVa Watershed

Beyond the local homeowners and apartment rental occupants pitching in, there is also an effort to effect the government on all levels to regulate and watch for heavy polluters. Further upstream in Maryland and Virginia, regulations have been put in place to prevent excessive dumping and polluting.

In Northern Virginia, largely, the approach has been about community outreach and education rather than adopting a hardline tactic of regulation. It has taken a combination of both regulation and community involvement to achieve the current level of success.
